Certain resources will be needed by a student, especially on the graduate level, to do effectively several types of writing, such as term or research papers, a thesis, and/or a dissertation. This will ensure that that his or her writing skills will have the characteristics of strong composition, excellent grammar, and a consistent stylistic approach. Remember that academic writing presents a polished and professional image.
A term paper is generally intended to describe an event, a concept, or argue a point. "Term paper" and "research paper" are interchangeable, but this is not completely accurate because not all term papers involve academic research, and not all research papers are term papers.
Writing a thesis or a dissertation is probably the most significant work of the graduate student. It requires him or her to draw upon substantial research, demonstrate mastery of research techniques, and reveal an ability to communicate knowledge to the academic community.
A thesis is theory-verifying. It may only show how a particular theoretical framework is effective in a particular problem area. For example, it may only go so far as to evaluate, estimate, assess a particular issue or research area. Or, it may point out the problem(s) arising from a particular precontrived research area, the problem(s) the candidate wishes to solve in a doctorate program.
A dissertation is theory-building. It may bolster up an old theory whose relevance and responsiveness has proved to be still effective, or it may improve on an existing theory whose improvement is based on its effectiveness to answer current needs, and is able to look for a solution to its weakness(s), or it may completely demolish an old theory to give way to a new one. Or, in some cases, theory-building may take the form of an action program.
